Celebrations, Traditions and Festivities

 A look at our learning...

Fundations: we have learned all 26 lowercase letters of the alphabet!  Yay!  This means your child should know the name, sound and correct formation of all 26 lowercase letters.  Next week, they will have a Fundations assessment, similar to the one I showed you at parent-teacher conferences, so you can see what letters/sounds/formations they need to work on.  I will send these home in next week's Friday Folders.

Our final two letters are z and qu.  We learned that "qu" is a "scaredy cat" and can never be alone.  When spelling words, q and u must always be together.

Please use the following verbal prompts when forming these letters:

z: across, slant down, across

qu: over, around dow....n, curve back (q) down, curve up, down (u)

Practicing proper line placement of our spelling words

Shared Reading: we read the book I can see Christmas and the poem Look What I See. Both texts featured our new word wall words an & can.

Next weeks new spelling words:

dad

had

Writing Workshop: now that we know all 26 letter sounds, students should be applying this knowledge more and more when spelling words and writing stories.  At the beginning of the school year simply drawing pictures was ok, then adding a random string of letters showed they had an awareness of print even if you couldn't read it.  Now, they should be writing words that are legible and using their letter sounds for at least beginning and ending sounds in words.

Math: this week we worked on graphing, explored calculators, teen numbers, shapes and making shapes using other shapes (for example-6 triangles can make a hexagon, but so can one triangle, one rhombus and one trapezoid).  Teen numbers can be tricky.  We are singing this song daily at math time to help us learn them.

Social Studies/Family Traditions: a reminder the family project about your family traditions are due on Monday.  A form for you to fill out was in last week's Friday Folder.  A bag was attached for you to send in something that goes along with your family tradition.  Please have your child practice what they will be sharing about at home so they are prepared when we share throughout next week.  If you lost this form/bag and need another, please email me and I will send another one home.
Not only does this help us learn more about each other, but ties in nicely to our cultures and traditions Social Studies Unit.

Lunch with the Principal: Kai'Elle was chosen as our December Lunch with the Principal winner!  She enjoyed lunch and games with Dr. Woods and 4 other Kindergarten friends on Monday! Yay Kai'Elle!

Don't forget! Monday's we wear BEU Spirit Wear!
