Snow much fun in room 302

A look at our learning...

Fundations: now that we have finished learning all 26 lowercase letters, we are moving onto reading and writing 3-4 letter words by "tapping them out."  Ask your child to show you how to tap out a word.  More information is included in our team newsletter in this week's Friday Folder.

Heggerty: this is a time where we work on phonological and phonemic awareness.  The last few weeks we have been learning about word families.  We have learned that word families are the same at the end of the word and this is why they rhyme.  We also learned that if you know one word in a word family, you can make many new words.  For example: since we know the spelling word can, it also helps us know how to read and write man, tan, fan, ran, etc. I encourage you to practice this skill, verbally and in written form, at home as well.

Shared Reading/Spelling: this week we read the book They are on to help us practice our new spelling word on.  They are discovering they can read more and more books as they are learning more and more new word wall words every week.  When they are finding words in books they know, this is called “monitoring on the known,” which is a HUGE skill to learn! So proud of them!

Writing Workshop: We are continuing to move forward in our writing process. Students have progressed from telling a story through pictures, to adding labels, and now to writing a “story.” In Kindergarten, a sentence is considered a story at this stage of development.

We are learning the full writing process you see in the picture below. Students are expected to spell word wall words correctly and to stretch out, tap out, or sound out any non–word wall words.

Math: we are continuing to work on addition and subtraction within 10. Students are learning and using important vocabulary such as: addition, adding, subtraction, take away, in all, what is left, equals, plus, minus, and equation. We encourage you to use this same vocabulary at home to help reinforce their learning.

We are also solving problems through number stories and showing our work using tools like number racks, cubes, and ten frames. Another big focus is learning how to write a number equation that matches the story or model.

This is big stuff for kindergarten, but they are doing so well, and I am proud of the progress I am seeing every day!

Holiday fun: Jack is back!  One of Santa's helpers has been visiting my classroom since 2011.  He loves seeing all the things the kindergarteners are learning and reporting the kind things he sees to his "boss" Santa Claus!  The kids were excited to meet him this week and they all assured me they would be showing Jack only the BEST things to report to Santa! πŸ˜€Check out what Jack has surprised us with this week!

Friday craft & Reindeer cam: it's time to take the turkeys down and bring in the reindeer! We read the book The Little Reindeer to go along with our craft. Our room is feeling very festive.  Speaking of reindeer, we found Santa's security camera at the North Pole and are able to watch his beautiful reindeer throughout the day!  Sometimes we even get glimpses of Santa himself!  So exciting!  You can watch at home too. Check it out here. There are times that Santa will read a story, and most are times we aren't in school, so you can enjoy it at home with your family.  Enjoy these magical moments with your little ones, they are only young once and it goes by so quickly. I try to bring as much magic and joy as I can into their lives during the school day. As they grow older, they may not remember when they learned certain letters or how to count, but they will remember these magical moments.

Winter Party: ❄️πŸŽ„ our second class party of the year will be our Winter Party on Friday, December 19th. A big thank-you to our room parent, Kayla Hagedorn, for organizing! πŸŽ…✨

We need your help once again by signing up to donate items for the party. There are also volunteer spots available for those who can help with set-up or clean-up. If you plan to attend the party, please consider signing up for one of these slots — it is greatly appreciated and very helpful to us all. ☃️❤️

❄️✨ Holiday Fun in Kindergarten! ✨πŸŽ„

The holiday season, and all the fun that comes with it, is officially here! I wanted to share a few exciting things you’ll find in this week’s Friday Folder to help us celebrate together:

πŸŽ€ 1) Kindergarten Cozy Day
More details are included in the Kindergarten Team Newsletter, but mark your calendars for this extra-comfy and festive day on Friday, December 19th!

🎁 2) Classroom Book Exchange — December 19th
We’ll be doing our class book exchange on the same day as Cozy Day. A detailed note is in the Friday Folder with everything you need to know.

πŸ“š 3) December Scholastic Book Order
This month’s Scholastic book order has a quick turnaround and is due by Monday at 3:30 p.m. to ensure delivery before Christmas.
If you’re planning to order a book for our class exchange, this is a great place to look, prices are usually cheaper than other stores! If you are purchasing books for your own child that you want kept a secret for Christmas, please send me an email and when they arrive, I will contact you directly rather than sending home with your child.  I believe all children need at least one book for Christmas!

🏠❤️ 4) December Family Tradition Activity
We absolutely loved seeing all the creativity in November’s “Disguise a Turkey” project!
For December, we’re asking families to share a family tradition. This can be a Christmas/holiday tradition or any tradition your family enjoys, it does not have to be holiday-related.
More information is in the Friday Folder. We hope everyone participates so each child feels included and we can learn more about the wonderful families in our class.

❄️ Thank you for helping make this season magical for our kindergarteners!

❄️☃️ First Snowfall Fun!

We absolutely loved seeing those huge snowflakes fall on Monday, and you can’t keep kindergarteners inside during their first snowfall at school! We made sure to head outside and let them enjoy the snow, and they had so much fun playing in it.

Thank you to everyone for making sure your child comes to school each day with a winter coat, gloves, and something for their ears. It makes a huge difference and helps us enjoy outdoor time safely and comfortably all winter long!

Here are a few fun pictures from our time outside, but many more are on the class Facebook page.  Please join if you haven't.

More fun at school
