Fire Prevention Week

 A look at our learning...

Fire Prevention Week: this week was Fire Prevention week and we had fun learning about all things firefighters, firetrucks and fire safety.  Tuesday we enjoyed a visit from the Columbia Fire Department, Station 7.  We learned about their job, fire suits, equipment and more!  They encouraged the students to remind their families to change their smoke detector batteries twice a year (when the time changes) and to know two ways out of their house in case of emergency.  I enjoyed hearing the students come to school this week telling me they talked about this at home with you and could confidently tell me multiple ways to get out of their home safely.  Please take the time to talk about this with your family if you haven't.

Fundations:
we learned the name, sound and correct letter formation for lowercase a and g.  We learned there is a "funny a," that we sometimes see in books, and the regular a that we  write.

Please use the following verbal prompts:

a-over, around, down (NOT circle and a stick)

g-over, around, dow....n, curve up

Shared Reading & Science:
we continue to tie science into our Shared Reading time.

We have learned the following:

*Parts of a book (cover, back cover, spine, author, illustrator, title page and/or table of contents, page numbers)

*Readers ask questions as they read/listen: Who, What, When, Where, Why, How, I wonder?

*Living things need water, food and/or soil, air, space, sunlight

*Plants and pumpkins

Writing Workshop: we are learning about where writers get ideas and how to put those ideas down on paper.  Right now "writing" is in the form of drawings and we are writing about everyday things that we do (riding our bikes, going to Level Up, going to the park, etc.)  This is why we have spent so much time learning how to draw people (not stick people), backgrounds/settings and 3 start coloring.  The students tell a story through their drawings.  The first stage of writing is to be able to verbally tell a story and then draw pictures to help tell the story.  Next we will learn how to label our story.

Math:
we continued to learn about triangles, numbers and counting.  Check your child's Friday Folder for a "Pocket Problems" activity to do at home.

Some fun pictures from choice time and friends that earned "lunch with the teacher."
