Welcome Back!

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a nice, relaxing Thanksgiving break!
The kiddos loved telling me about what they did and their snow day fun!

A look at our learning...

Fundations: this week we learned the letters z and qu.  We learned that q is a scaredy cat and always needs u by his side. Ask your child what is special about the letter q and they should be able to tell you that same thing!  They think it's pretty funny!

Please use the following verbal prompts:
z: across, slant down, across
qu: over, around dow...n, curve back (q) down, curve up, down (u)

We have now learned the name, sound and correct letter formation for all 26 letters of the alphabet!

Shared Reading: this week we had two new spelling words. Now that we are into the spelling word routine we will have two words a week, rather than one.  To help us practice our new words, you and an, we read the poem "Happy Birthday" and the big books You and I and Jump On.

Writing Workshop: we are goal setting at writing time.  Check out our goal chart below.  I am talking with each child one-on-one and we are deciding together what they think they can improve on when writing.  Once we pick a goal from the chart, their name will be written on a post-it and placed next to that goal.  Once they have mastered that goal, we can pick a new goal.
Ask your child what their goal is.  I haven't gotten around to every child yet, so some might not have a goal yet, but they will by the end of next week!

Math: this week we learned a new game called "Roll and Record."  This game helps us with number ID and correct number formation when writing.  We also learned a fun online game called "Number Line Squeeze."  A more detailed note about this is in their Friday Folder.  This is an Every Day math game they can also access at home through the CPS portal.  Every Day math is the name of our math curriculum.  The handout you picked up at parent teacher conferences explained how to access the CPS portal at home.

Science: we wrapped up our weather science unit this week!  The kids sure loved learning about weather, how to dress for the weather, making weather predictions, etc.

Service Learning: this week the kiddos in Kindergarten have been learning what Service Learning means and how Beulah Ralph is special because we are they only elementary school in Columbia that focuses on Service Learning.  They have watched videos from the past two years of Service Learning projects those past Kindergartners did and we have been reading books about helping others. They learned that the Kindergarteners two years ago helped Monarch Butterflies.  They learned the Kindergartners last year helped a school in Texas devastated by the hurricane.  The next step is to take this new information they have learned and decide, as a Kindergarten group, what we want our Service Learning project to be this year.  The kids get a say just as much as the teachers.

Holidays: every year at this time it is fun to talk about the different holidays that will be celebrated.  Today we learned about Hanukkah and tied this in with our Friday craft.  We made torn paper Menorah's.  We learned that Hanukkah lasts for 8 days and begins on Monday.  We learned they light a Menorah each day of Hanukkah and that Menorah is a fancy name for a candle holder.  We learned the candle that lights each of the 8 candles is called a shammash.  We learned blue is a color of Hanukkah. We learned they like to play a game with a dreidel, which is similar to a top.  We learned they like to eat latkes, which are potato pancakes and might taste like hash browns or french fries.  We learned they like to be with family and friends and exchange gifts, sing songs and read stories on Hanukkah.  Ask your child what they learned today!

Happy Thanksgiving

We have enjoyed learning about and celebrating Thanksgiving this week in our classroom.

It's always fun to get paint on our hands!

We wrote and made crowns that tell what we are thankful for.

I'm thankful for these little turkeys.

We learned about the first thanksgiving and made bead bracelets that help us tell the story.  Please ask us to share the bracelet and story with you at home.

We had counselor with Mrs. Davison and learned about how to be a good and kind friend.
We also learned the 5 magic manner words:
*please
*thank you
*excuse me
*you're welcome
*I'm sorry

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Enjoy time with your little ones and entire family!

What's happening?

Some like to call this month "No School November," which is true, but it is also the busiest month!  Heroes Day, Book Fair, Parent-Teacher conferences, Thanksgiving!    Oh my!

Happy Birthday Dr. Majerus!!  They loved making these special crowns to celebrate our wonderful principal today!  We also made him a birthday book and sang Happy Birthday!

A look at our learning over the past 2 shorter weeks...

Fundations: we learned the lowercase x and y.  We have now learned 24 out of 26 lowercase letter names, sounds and correct letter formation.  The only two letters we have left to learn are qu and z.  We will work on those the week we return from Thanksgiving break.
It is important that your child knows and uses, at all times, the correct letter formation for all of these letters at all times.  Not just during our Fundations time.  They must now form their letters correctly "for the rest of their life."  (as I tell them).

Please use the following verbal prompts at home:
x: slant down, slant down backwards
y: slant down, slant dow...n backwards to the worm line (the short side of the y should be written first)

Shared Reading: we have read many books that featured our new word of the week, can.  Going Places, I Can Help, and You Can Go.

In the pictures below they are "buddy reading" these books.  Notice how good readers point to the words when they read.

Writing Workshop: we have now learned all 6 steps of the writing process.  This is the order we follow when writing stories.  I hope you enjoyed the stories your child brought home on Wednesday when we cleaned out their folders and could see the growth they have made over the course of first trimester.

Math: we've worked a lot on numbers, counting and writing our numbers lately.  Check out their Friday Folder for ways to practice at home and to see their turkeys that helped us with our numbers to 10.

Science: we've been learning about weather the past couple of weeks.  We have had about a 30 minute science lesson each day.  We've learned how to be weather watchers, know how to dress for different types of weather, thermometers, wind, seasons, how the sun warms the Earth, etc.
We've learned how to play some new board games this week!

Looking so nice for "Dress to Impress" day!

Heroes Day 2018

We enjoyed celebrating our 3rd annual Heroes Day at BEU.
We love spending time with our grandparents, current and past members of the military and everyday heroes on this day.
Turn up the volume and enjoy a video from today.

Happy November

A look at our learning this week...

Fundations: we learned the lowercase v and w this week.  They are the first "slide" letters we have learned.
Please use the following verbal prompts when writing at home:
v-slide down, slide up
w-slide down, slide up, slide down, slide up
Bakr leading us with our sound cards
Sutton leading us with our vowel sounds

Shared Reading: we read the book Look at me.  This book had several of our word wall words on every page: at, am, I,a.  We have now learned 7 word wall words!  Check your child's folder to see how they did on this week's spelling test.  I notice many of them are spelling the word am backwards.  I'd suggest working extra hard on this one.

I will not introduce new words next week, due to only 3 days of school.  We will have a test on Friday, but will be review of the 7 words we have already learned.  So this would be a good week to really practice, practice, practice!  Make it fun, use the "50 ways to practice sight words" paper I sent home a few weeks ago to switch it up!

Rhyming: we work on rhyming every day and I notice it is a bit tricky for my class.  They are pretty good at finding two pictures that rhyme, but have a harder time HEARING rhyme.  For example:  we do an activity where I verbally say three words and they are supposed to reply back with the TWO words that rhyme.  I might say sock, sun, clock and hope they reply back sock, clock.  Many are getting rhyme and beginning sound confused.  Many want to say sock, sun rhyme.  We will keep practicing, but any extra practice like this at home is always great!

Daily 5: we learned a few new Daily 5 centers this week! Ask your child about the Search & Tally center and the Word Wall Cut & Paste center.  They may even have some of these papers in their Friday Folder.  Both of these centers help us practice our spelling words.

Writing Workshop: we are really working hard on sounding out words to write our story.  We are also working on beginning our sentences with an uppercase letter and ending with a period.

Math: we worked some more on shapes, writing our numbers to at least 10 and positional words.  We watched this cute video about positional words.Click here

Making shapes with ribbon

Fun things this week...

Mr. Moody shared a spooky flannel board story with us!

Ms. Amy, our head lunch lady, found a salamander outside of school and shared it with us in our classroom!  The kids loved it!  He was so tiny!

Always a good feeling to complete a puzzle!

Coach C would love photos of your child being active for his bulletin board!  Feel free to send one in with your child at any time!  I will be sure to get it to Coach C!
