February Citizen of the Month

A look at our learning the past two weeks...

Fundations: we focused on the trick words and, are and to.  We call them trick words because they are tricky to spell.  You can't sound them out and just have to know how to spell them.  We will be learning more trick words over the course of 3rd trimester and will tie them into our weekly spelling words.  We also continue to work on tapping out 3 letter words to read and write and correct lowercase letter formation.

Next week's new spelling words

his

Writing Workshop: we continue to work on opinion writing.  We are working on stating our opinion and giving at least two reasons why we feel that way.  Their stories should sound something like "I like.....because.....and....."

I look forward to showing you the growth they have made in their writing since the beginning of Kindergarten and last trimester when we meet for their parent-teacher conference this week.

Math: check your child's Friday Folder for ways to extend our weekly math lessons at home.

Science: we began our weather science unit.  We will be tracking the weather daily and in a couple of weeks Mrs. Fitch, our media specialist, and I will be team teaching for a week and using the data we collected for further weather related lessons.

Library Check-out: it was an exciting week for Kindergarten as they are now able to check out ONE early reader chapter book if they choose!  We learned about early chapter books that are appropriate for us and how, for most of us, it would be a book that our grown up could read TO us at home.

Citizen of the Month: Dev was chosen, by his peers, as our February Citizen of the Month.  What's even more special is that his twin sister in Ms. Tolbert's room was also chosen, by her peers, as Citizen of the Month!  What a fun coincidence!  Way to go, Dev!

Celebrations

In between the snow days, we have been able to celebrate several things at school!

I will share a few photos below, but you can see more on our class Facebook page!

We had a super fun Valentine's Day!

We had a blast on the 100th day of school!  I love that almost everyone participated in the dress up part!  It makes it so fun!

It was pretty cool to learn about and celebrate TWOS-day on 2-22-22!

A date like this is very rare!

Full week of learning!

 A look at our learning...

Fundations: tapping, tapping, tapping!  An important skill to become readers and writers and one we continue to practice during Fundations.  I am seeing more and more students apply this skill to their every day writing and not just during Fundations time!  Check your child's Friday Folder for ways to practice at home.

Shared Reading: we read the big books My Pet Dinosaur and Shapes I Know to help us practice our new word wall words an and can.  The second book also reinforced shapes we learn in Kindergarten.  We continue to work on pointing to words when we read, quickly reading word wall words, tapping out/sounding out unknown words and using the picture to help us figure out a tricky word.

Next week's spelling words:

are

to

Test is on Thursday, due to no school on Friday

Literacy Workstations: busy at work each day rotating through literacy workstations.  The stations reinforce the learning that takes place in Fundations, Shared Reading and Writing Workshop.

Math: this week we focused on teen numbers and 2-D and 3-D shapes.  We even went on a shape hunt around the school! Check your child's Friday Folder for ways to extend their learning at home.  Here are a few videos we use during our lessons.

Valentine fun: this week we made a cute "Bee Mine" craft to decorate our classroom and decorated our valentine bags in preparation for Monday!
