Happy Spring Break!

What an amazing turnout at our "Breakfast, Books and Buddies" event today!  Thank you so much for attending, it means so much to your child! We hope you had a great time! Check our class Facebook page to see all the photos and save any you might like!

Fundations: we continued to work on tapping out/reading/writing words with diagraphs in them.  In the pictures below we are being diagraph detectives and finding the words that have diagraphs.  Check your parent packet in the Friday Folder for how to do this at home.

Shared Reading: we read the big books Look at me and She will be to help us practice our new spelling words.  If you are traveling over spring break I recommend taking flash cards with the spelling words on them.  This would be a great thing for them to practice while on the plane or in the car!  They don't have to be fancy.  Just use index cards or even cut up pieces of paper!

New spelling words for after spring break:

you

said (review because still tricky)

Writing Workshop: they loved sharing their non-fiction/informational writing pieces about penguins and elephants with you during our breakfast today.  They have worked SO HARD on these and have done an amazing job!  You should be so proud of your little writers.

We will spend the first week back from spring break finishing up this unit and then move onto our final writing unit of the school year, opinion writing.

Math: we worked on 3D shapes (cube, cone, sphere, cylinder, pyramid and even added in rectangular prism), learned how to skip count and add on calculators, conducted a survey and made a graph about our favorite type of fruit and learned about pan balances/weight.

Check your child's Friday folder for ways to extend their learning at home.

Packmate of the Month: yay Miles!  He was chosen, by his peers, as our March Packmate of the Month!  We celebrated him at an assembly on Tuesday.

Ramadan:
we learned a bit about Ramadan this week.  We are fortunate to have a sweet friend in our class who celebrates Ramadan and was eager to share with her classmates.

Rainy days are perfect library days!

Celebrating our friends with Down Syndrome on World Down Syndrome Day with our silly socks!

Have a wonderful spring break!  Safe travels to all who are traveling!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Fundations: we started unit 4 this week, which will focus on diagraphs (wh, ch, sh, th, ck), learning more trick words (words that can't be sounded out) and reading sentences fluently. Check your parent packet for trick word flash cards to use at home.

Shared Reading & Spelling Words: we cleaned out our book boxes this week.  Your child brought home many of the Shared Reading books I have mentioned in this blog each week. Your child should be able to read these books to you because we practice them in the classroom.  They should also be able to read them because they are full of word wall words and words that aren't word wall words they should be able to decode/figure out using the reading strategies we have been learning throughout the year.  I recommend having them read some of these books to you to count towards their Pizza Hut reading log.

Next week's spelling words:

be

me

Writing Workshop: everyone has completed one penguin informational writing piece!  They are so proud of their work and I am too!  We can't wait to read them to you during "Breakfast, Books and Buddies" next Friday morning!

We are now learning about elephants for our next informational writing piece.

Math: we worked on teen numbers (specifically how they are one group of ten and some leftover), addition/subtraction and 3D shapes.

Planetarium: we had so much fun learning about space and planets today at the Rock Bridge High School planetarium!  Ask your child to tell you all about it!

St. Patrick's Day: I'm sure you will hear all about how those sneaky leprechaun's destroyed our classroom today while we were at the planetarium!  Lucky for us, they dropped their pot of gold and we were each able to bring some home! I'll post a video of their reaction on our class Facebook page.

Family Math Night: our class was well represented at Family Math Night on Tuesday!  Thanks for coming out! We hope you had fun!  Ayla and Claire each won an estimation jar for having the best guess as to how many objects were inside.  William, Bella, Jacob and Harrison won attendance prizes!

Read Across America Week: we had fun celebrating "Read Across America Week" this week.  On Monday, our 3rd grade buddies in Ms. Cohen's class came to read with us, Tuesday we visited the library, Thursday we shared our favorite book from home and Friday we dressed as our favorite book character!
