September Lunch with the principal

Yay Joselynn!
She was chosen to have "Lunch with the principal"
for the month of September!

Once a month a student from each classroom will be chosen to have "Lunch with the principal."  Today was Kindergarten's day and all 5 Kindergarten winners ate lunch with Dr. Majerus!  It is a surprise who is chosen until that day and we find out when their name is announced over the intercom at morning announcements!

A peek at our week

Twice a month a Kindergarten newsletter will come home that is from all 5 Kindergarten teachers.  Please check the Friday folder for this today.

A look at our learning this week...

Morning Work: this is the time the students are arriving between 8-8:20.  Once they unpack they begin their morning work, which is either something on paper (right now it's their handwriting sheets to practice the letters learned in Fundations) or a morning tub.  Morning tubs are buckets of activities ranging from fine motor skills, cooperative learning, literacy, math, etc.  We alternate days...so one day it is a paper/pencil activity and one day it is a morning tub.  Check out some pictures of the morning tubs we started this week:

Fundations: we learned the name, sound and correct letter formation for lowercase u and i. Please check the Friday Folder for ways to help at home.
Please use the following verbal prompts with your child when they are writing the letters:
i-down, dot
u-down, curve up, down
They should now be "experts" at the following lowercase letters: t, b, f, n, m, i, u

Shared Reading: This week we learned 2 new word wall words: am  and I. We learned that when I is by itself it must always be uppercase.  We read the Big Book I am a community worker to help us learn these words.  On Friday they received their own copy of this book to keep in their book boxes to read daily at Read to Self time.
Your child has learned how to read and spell the following word wall words this year: a, I, am.  Please practice writing these words at home and locating them in books.

Daily 5: We have begun Daily 5 centers.  These are literacy centers that we do each morning.  They work on a variety of skills at this time: reading, writing, fine motor skills, spelling, etc.  Once they are able to use the centers independently I will begin pulling small reading groups during this time (sometime in October is my goal).  While I am reading with small groups of children, the other students will be working with a partner at the centers. However, we must build up to this so that they are independent and not relying on teacher help during this time as I will be busy teaching small groups how to read and won't be able to help them at their centers.  That is why we just spend the next several weeks practicing before reading groups begin. Here are a few of the centers:

Math: please check the Friday folder for homelinks you can work on to extend their learning in the classroom.

Writing: this week we worked on writing letters and cards to students at Kohfeldt Elementary in Texas City, Texas.  Dr. Majerus will deliver the letters when he takes the donation items down next week.

Makerspace Friday's: Mrs. Fitch, our media specialist, has Makerspace Friday's.  A Makerspace are collaborative spaces where students gather to get creative with DIY projects, invent new ones and share ideas.  She often tries to incorporate STEM projects (science, technology, engineering, math) during this time.  Makerspace Friday's are optional and are on a first come first serve basis.  Only so many time slots are available for the entire school so we won't be able to participate each week, but I do try and sign my class up often! This week we celebrated International Dot Day. You can find more information here about this special day. Mrs. Fitch read us the story and had a variety of art supplies for us to make our own dots.  She is going to display them in the media center.

Hurricane Harvey Relief

3 cheers for Max!
He was the first friend in our class to donate socks for our new friends at Kohfeldt Elementary School in Texas City, Texas.

This morning at the "Monday Morning Meeting" we learned that our Service Learning Project this year for grades K-5 would be supporting this school that was greatly affected by the hurricane.  The first step is this donation drive.  It was truly heartwarming and so touching to see how interested and invested the children already are, even the little Kindergarteners.  Many of our lesson plans took a backseat today so that we could talk about the hurricane, see pictures of the school and photos of families homes who go to this school, etc.  I can tell many of you are talking with your children at home about this devastation because they were so concerned and wanted to talk about how to help all day today!  It was wonderful! Their kindness and desire to be helpful during this time of need is amazing!  So many of them told me they were going to ask mom and dad if they could go shopping right after school!  Thank you in advance for not only supporting this cause, but modeling and instilling this sense of giving to others in your little ones.  That is what service learning is all about and what we pride ourselves on at Beulah Ralph!

As the students bring in donations, they can either bring them to the classroom or drop off at the front of the Kindergarten hallway in the appropriate baskets for what they are donating.

A look at our learning...

A big THANK YOU to everyone who has utilized the car drop off at the front of the building or stopped upon entering our classroom each morning.  This has allowed the children to gain confidence and independence within themselves that they are "big kids" and also created a calm environment for them to begin their morning work at their tables each day.  I know sometimes it is hard to let our babies go, but boy do they thrive when given the chance!

A look at our learning this week...
Fundations: we learned the name, sound and correct letter formation for n & m.  Please check the Friday Folder for ways to help at home.  We use less "wordy" prompts than listed in the packets.  I will post our prompts each week.  t, b and f was posted last week.
Please use the following prompts at home with your child:
n-down, up and over
m-down, up and over, up and over

Shared Reading: we spent another week learning about the word "a."  We continued to read the books A Park and I Can See from last week.  This week we learned how to Buddy Read these books.  Buddy Reading is a cooperative learning strategy in which 2 children read an assigned text together.  They learned to sit "elbow to elbow, knee to knee" while one person points to the words and reads the story and the other listen.  They switch roles when finished so that both have the opportunity to read the familiar text.  We are learning ways to help our friends when they come to a tricky word or make a mistake.  We have done a lot of modeling of kind ways to be helpful and not hurtful.  They are SO PROUD to be beginning readers!  They are now able to keep copies of both of these books in their book boxes for independent reading later in the day.
We are now experts at the word "a" so it has been added to our word wall!  The kids were so excited to have our first word posted.

Math: The new math series that CPS adopted this year is a spiraling curriculum.  This means students will see the same topics throughout their K-5 career with each encounter increasing in complexity and reinforcing previous learning.  So this means we won't spend an entire month on shapes, then a month on adding, etc.  It will be taught at various times throughout the year.  This week was mainly spent on counting and identifying numbers 0-10. We also discussed birthday's and how they tie into math.  Please see the handout in the Friday Folder this week.

Writing: We finished up week 2 of guided drawing (see last week's blog post for more info). Your child is bringing home their guided drawing journal in their take home folder today.  They have gotten SO much better at drawing people and settings in just a few short weeks!
Next week we will begin learning where writers get ideas for stories and what they, as 5 and 6 year olds, can write about.

Science: Nurse Lynn visited again this week to teach us about germs.  We watched a fun Sid the Science Kid video about germs and how NOT to spread them. We learned when we sneeze or cough we need to use our "cough pocket" (elbow) and not our hands or just out into the air.
Nurse Lynn brought some special lotion and a black-light that helped us see germs on their hands.
She then taught us the correct way to wash our hands:
1) wet your hands
2) 1 squirt of soap....rub your hands together getting both sides and in between fingers while singing the ABC song in your head
3) rinse with water
4) dry with 1-2 paper towels

Have your child show you the correct way at home!  So many of them want to get soap first, when really they need water first.  They also want to rinse the soap off immediately, so we are really reinforcing singing the song before rinsing.

After they washed their hands they were able to use the black-light to see if they washed all the germs off!  Most did a great job!

Have a great weekend!
Enjoy the beautiful weather!

BEU Fundraiser

Today your child was supposed to come home with a fundraiser packet, but they accidentally forgot to deliver them to my classroom so ours will be sent home tomorrow!
A Magical Holidays catalog will be coming home with a variety of items inside for your child to try and sell.

Here are the magic numbers to remember:
3-every child who sells 3 items will get to attend a BMX bike show here at BEU
10-every child who sells 10 items will get VIP seating at the BMX bike show
25-every child who sells 25+ items will get autographs at the BMX bike show and be able to get in the money machine for 30 seconds and see how much money they win!

Each grade level will also have a winner.  The class that sells the most in each grade level will win a robotic pig.  This pig will be entered into the school wide pig race.  The ONE class that wins the pig race will win $100 for their classroom. This would be awesome for anyone to win!!

Sounds silly, but the kids were SUPER excited this morning! Thank you in advance for supporting our school and PTA! The money from this fundraiser will help us buy many items for our classrooms.

Weekly Update

It has been a busy, busy week in room 302!
A great deal of learning has started!

Check out what we learned this week:

Fundations: we learned the letter name, letter sound and correct letter formation for the lowercase letters t, b, f.  Please refer to the Fundations packet in your child's Friday Folder to help extend their learning at home.  Once we teach the correct letter formation we expect children to write it correctly at all times.  So this means as of now they should be writing the lowercase t, b, and f correctly.  Here are the prompts we use if you want to make sure your child is doing it correctly:

t-down, across
b-down, up around
f-over, down across
They know to say these words as they are forming each letter.  Ask them to show you on pencil and paper or practice on the sheets in the Friday Folder.

Shared Reading: Shared Reading is an interactive reading experience that occurs when students join in or share the reading of a book or poem while guided and supported by a teacher. The teacher explicitly models the skills of proficient readers, including reading with fluency and expression. Starting out these are VERY simply books....2-3 words per page and repetitive.

This week during Shared Reading we read 2 big books: A Park and I Can See.  Both books featured the word "a."  We learned that "a" can be a letter or a word.  Ask your child to find the word "a" in books with you.

Math: Each week papers will come home in the Friday Folder explaining what we did in math that week and how you can extend your child's learning at home.  Please refer to those each week.  Below are some pictures of the Number Hunt we went on today!  We learned that numbers are EVERYWHERE!

Writing: This week your child received a special writing journal.  We learned how drawing pictures is an important part of writing.  Before we can learn to write words, we need to be able to draw clear pictures.  Children learn to "read" books by reading the pictures before they read the words. The same is true with writing!  A child must be able to draw a clear picture and verbally tell a story that matches the picture before they are able to write words, sentences and stories.  In Kindergarten we learn to write stories about ourselves.  So this week we took time to learn how to draw people, which is VERY hard for kiddos (and some adults!).  We learned we can use basic shapes to draw people. We want to get away from drawing spider people (circles with lines coming out of them for arms and legs) or stick people (we aren't made of sticks!) We also learned that when we draw people we need to include a setting with our person and that our people need to be grounded in the setting and not floating in space. Check out the charts we made to help us in the classroom.  Ask your child to draw you a picture of themselves following what they learned on these charts.

Counselor: This week we had our first counselor lesson on Wednesday with Mrs. Davison.  Mrs. Davison is a counselor at Russel Blvd. Elementary, but also works part time at Beulah in K-1 since we have 5 sections of classrooms.  Mrs. Harris is BEU's counselor and while she won't be teaching our classes, we will still see her often.  During counselor times we learn how to be responsible, respectful, positive, kind, problem solvers....which are the 5 BEU expectations!  We have counselor every other Wednesday for 30 minutes.

Safe Seat: At the beginning of each year I feel it is important to discuss the Safe Seat with children and parents. So many times I feel the Safe Seat has a negative connotation to it and that is not the way it is intended or used.  The Safe Seat is a seat in the classroom away from other students to help a student regroup, process with an adult, and join the class when they or the teacher feel they are ready.  Sometimes a student may choose to go to the safe seat on their own accord.  Maybe they are feeling sad, scared or just need a moment to themselves.  That is great when they use it this way!  Sometimes a teacher chooses when a child goes to the safe seat.  This could be for various reasons: unsafe body, difficulty following directions and has needed many reminders, etc.  If a child is sent to the safe seat for behavior, then it has always been my protocol that they miss a few minutes of recess to "walk the zipper" outside as a consequence.  The "zipper" is their line up spot.  This way they are still getting movement and activity, but their free choice is limited for a few minutes.  After they have done this for a few minutes, we talk about why they are there and then they can play.

A BIG thing we reinforce with the kiddos is the privacy of the safe seat.  We talked today about how it's not appropriate to go home talking about which kids went to the safe seat, who had a consequence at recess, etc.  It is definitely appropriate for them to talk to you if THEY were the ones in the safe seat, but we talk about how it isn't our business if it is someone else.  I reinforce to them that the safe seat doesn't mean they are "bad."  I NEVER use the word "bad" in my classroom, I let them know I love every single one of them every day! It just means they might have made a mistake and needed a few minutes to regroup.  We talked about how it is totally ok to make mistakes.  We ALL make mistakes!
Along these same lines is the relationship and trust between me and the students.  Please know that I will not contact you every time your child has been to the Safe Seat or had to miss a few minutes of recess.  I want them to know that our classroom is a safe place to make mistakes and be a kid.  If I am telling mom and dad every time they have a mis-step, they lose this trust and comfortableness at school.  Please know I will communicate with you if it becomes an on-going problem.

Yay! You made it to the end!  Thank you for taking the time to read about our week!
Have a wonderful 3 day weekend!
