Go Chiefs!

A look at our learning...

Fundations: we continue to work on tapping out 3 letter words when reading and writing.  We are also learning about the "bossy" or silent e that some words have at the end.  We are learning that sometimes the "bossy e" tells the first vowel in the word to say it's name. Words such as cape, made, like, etc. have the "bossy e."  They thought this was a pretty cool thing to learn and thought calling it the "bossy e" was pretty funny!

Shared Reading:  we read the Big Book Dad and I to help us practice our new spelling words dad and had.  We worked on making connections to the books we read and shared things that we like to do with our dads or father figures.  Making connections to the books we read is an important skill to learn in kindergarten and beyond.

Spelling words:  the spelling tests this week were a little rough.  I encourage you to please practice these regularly to ensure students can read and write all words correctly at all times.  Please take a look at the test that comes home today and help your child practice any they have missed, including if they miss points for their name due to incorrect line placement.

Next week's new spelling words:

in

if

Writing: I am so impressed with the writers your children are becoming!  We have been setting individual writing goals over the past few weeks and it has positively impacted their daily writing.  Check out the goal chart below.  Once they master these goals, we will choose a new one together.  I can't wait to show you side-by-side writing pieces from the beginning of the year until now when you attend parent teacher conferences in a few weeks!  I think you will be amazed at how far they have come!

Math: this week we worked more on addition through games and stories and revisited shapes and how they are everywhere in our world!  I have noticed that many struggle to know the difference between a square and rectangle, so this is something you can also practice at home and we will continue to work on at school as well.

By the end of trimester 2 (which is next week), your child should be able to:

*Count to at least 60 by 1's and 10's

*Count backwards from 10

*Count and record a set of objects to 10

*Identify most basic shapes from the following: square, circle, rectangle, triangle, rhombus (diamond), hexagon, trapezoid

*Write and recognize 15 out of 20 numbers from 0-20

Can your child do these things independently? If not, now is a great time to start practicing!

Science: the Force & Motion unit in Kindergarten is one of the most fun science units!  We learned that a force is a push or a pull.  On Friday we had a full day of science! All 5 Kindergarten classrooms rotated through each classroom doing various Force and Motion stations.  It was so much fun!  Check out some of the pictures below.

My classroom: bowling

Mrs. Imler: force and motion with straws and pom poms

Ms. Kylie: push and pull cut and paste activity

Mrs. Croom: hard pushes and soft pushes with various size balls

Ms. Williams: cars and ramps

We ended the day with a Peep & Chirp video about Force & Motion.  Ask your child to tell you more about each station. Here are a few pictures, but even more will be on our class Facebook page.

Super Bowl Spirit Week: we had so much fun participating in Super Bowl Spirit Week this week!  Check out the cute photos from each day below!  Now, let's cheer the Chiefs onto a big win this weekend!

World Read Aloud Day: we celebrated this special day on Wednesday by reading with our 3rd grade buddies in Ms. Cohen's class.  Here are a few photos, but photos of all students are on our class Facebook page.

Global School Play Day: as Mr. Rogers said "Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning, but for children play IS serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood."  We had such a fun day learning through play and I love that Beulah Ralph values this day every school year. Even more pictures on the class Facebook page.

100th Day of School: we are SO excited for the 100th day of school on Wednesday  Please see your child's Friday Folder for a reminder about how we will celebrate this special day.  We hope ALL students will participate! Please make sure your child arrives to school on time, as our fun will start right away and I don't want them to miss out on anything!

100th day collections are due from ALL students no later than Tuesday, February 11th, as we want them proudly displayed on the 100th day of school.  A detailed note about this was sent home in last week's Friday Folder. Contact me if you mis-placed it and need more information.

Valentine's Day: if your child hasn't started working on their valentines, start this weekend!  It is important that the student is the one who writes their name and their friends name on their valentine.  This is good practice for them!  However, sitting down to do all of them at once will be overwhelming and tough.  I recommend doing a few each day.  Information about this was sent home a few week's ago in Friday Folders, as well as a class list of names.

PJ's and Pancakes: we hope to see many BEU families enjoying this free event tomorrow!  They are also still looking for more volunteers- an easy 30 minute shift!  Check the signup here to see how you can help.

More fun from our week!  Including a cute new door decoration curtesy of Heidi Clements and Amanda Alexander!  Thank you!! We love it!

Happy Groundhog's Day!

A look at our learning...

Fundations: Your child has now learned how to form ALL uppercase and lowercase letters correctly.  While I do see them forming their letters correctly, for the most part, when we explicitly work on it during Fundations time, I do notice many struggling to carry the correct formation over into their daily writing.  I encourage you to hold them accountable for forming their letters neatly and correctly at all times.  The more we perfect it now, the more successful they will be as writers as they go to first grade and beyond.  The less they have to think about how to form their letters, the more they can focus on the craft of writing.

Don't know where to start to hold them accountable for their learning? Their name is a great place!  Do they rush and just slop their name down on paper?  If so, have them erase and tell them to slow down and form their letters correctly.  Then expand beyond that to spelling words, etc.

Please refer to the Fundations parent packet in the Friday Folder.  I encourage you to use the ideas for handwriting and tapping out words at home throughout the week. If you need a new copy that has the verbal prompts listed for ALL uppercase and lowercase letters, send me an email and I will happily send another one home.

Writing Workshop: this week we wrapped up our narrative writing unit.  Since the beginning of Kindergarten we have been writing narratives, stories about our lives, as this is what Kindergarteners are experts on and can easily come up with something to write about.  Whether it was a t-ball game, playing in the snow on a snow day or a simple trip to the store with their parents.  They have grown from telling a story only through a drawing, to adding labels, to writing a simple sentence or two. I am so proud of their hard work and growth!

Next week we are beginning our opinion writing unit!  This is always a fun one, as we know that all 5-6 year old's have opinions! lol!

Math:  we have begun unit 5.  Please see the handout in your child's Friday Folder to see what your child will be learning over the course of this unit and how to help extend their learning at home.

Next week's Spelling Words:

dad

had

Just like I mentioned with the word "mom," we will want to reinforce using lowercase d's when writing the word "dad." We will discuss how dad is what we call our fathers, but it's not their actual name, so we write lowercase d's.

Groundhog's day: we had fun learning about this special day!  We can't wait to see if the groundhog will see his shadow on Sunday!  Six more weeks of winter or will spring be here soon?  Check your child's daily take home folder for a book and some fun activities we did today!

Packmate of the Month: yay Vedanth!  He was chosen, by his peers, as our January Packmate of the Month!  We celebrated him, and the other winners, at an assembly today. We were honored to have Monica Naylor, Beulah Ralph's daughter, help present the awards today in honor of Beulah Ralph's birthday!  I love how many students wore their BEU spirit wear or blue and green today in her honor! All students also received a Rice Krispie treat from Mr. Foulk and Mrs. Isenogle for Beulah Ralph's birthday.

Valentine party: We still need MANY parent volunteers to help our final party of the year be a success.  There are many open slots of things needed on this sign up.  I hope you will consider donating an item to our class.  You do not need to attend the party in order to donate supplies.  Almost all items listed are things you can just purchase and send in as you get them.  Want to purchase the craft for our party?  Email me!  I have two ideas I can send you and both are on Amazon. Thank you to those who have already signed up to help at the actual party or purchase an item for the party.  It is greatly appreciated and your support does not go unnoticed.

Reading logs: January reading logs are due on Monday.  Please make sure your child's name is on the reading log and it is signed by an adult.  A reminder that reading is our only required homework at Beulah Ralph.  All students should be turning in their reading log each month.  February reading logs are in your child's Friday Folder.

Next week: next week will be a busy and fun week!  Check your child's Friday Folder for information on a Super Bowl Spirit Week, Global School Play Day and an activity to start working on for the 100th day of school.  Next week we will also celebrate World Read Aloud Day and be spending some time reading with our 3rd grade buddies.  If your child has a favorite picture book, they can bring it on Wednesday, February 5th.

Illness: illness is running rampant at school right now, teachers and students.  While we always want to see your sweet little ones, please keep them at home if they are not feeling well.  It is the only way we can help them get better and keep the illness from spreading.  A reminder from our nurse is below.

Just a reminder, here are our CPS Illness guidelines:

Students exhibiting the following symptoms will be sent home and/or should remain at home if they exhibit any of the following:

  • Temperature of 100.4 degrees or greater
  • Vomiting with associated signs of illness
  • Diarrhea
  • Unusual or unexplained rash
  • Persistent cough
  • Ongoing symptoms of discomfort or immobility from an injury
  • A concerning health condition that may require further medical evaluation

Students may return to school when:

  • Fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication
  • Vomiting and/or diarrhea free for 24 hours

I hope everyone stays healthy and those who are ill, as we have had several in our class, feel better soon!

More fun at school this week
