April (Snow) Showers Bring May Flowers?!

Welcome back from Spring Break! Or was it Winter Break?! Hard to tell with this crazy weather! I can't say I have ever had snow on my birthday!  It's gonna be a cold Cardinals game for me tomorrow!!  I am hoping it will start to feel like Spring, and stay that way, very soon! These kids need to get outside and run and play and enjoy fresh air!

A look at our learning...

Fundations: This week we learned a new spelling rule about the letters c and k.  We learned that when the next letter is a a,o, or u you use a c first.  And if the next letter is an e or i you use a k first.  Here are some examples:  cat, cut, cot, kit, keep.  The kids really caught on quickly to this concept and have applied it in their daily writing.  We also have this poster in our classroom to help us remember.

Shared Reading: we read the big books Tools, My Neighborhood and The Busy Pond to help us practice our new word wall words are and for.
Next week's new word wall words:
not
but

On the Friday before Spring Break every child spelled the word wall word said correctly!  Whoo-hoo!  We have been working on this word for so long and we were so excited!  To celebrate our success, we will be having a pajama day next Friday, April 13th. Please make sure your child still wears tennis shoes with their pj's.

Math: this week we created surveys, collected data and recorded the data on posters to share with our classmates.  Ask your child what survey question they asked their friends and recorded on their poster.  We also learned what the word estimate means and made estimates on items inside of several mason jars, as well as continuing to review our shapes through games.

Writing: we have started our third, and final, unit of writing.  During April and May we will learn about Opinion Writing.  We will learn to write an opening sentence that states what our opinion is, provide at least 3 supporting details as to why we feel that way and write a closing.  This week we practiced by sharing our opinions on the best pet and best food.
