Crazy week of winter

What a crazy week of winter we had!
Despite the snow day and late starts, we got in as much learning as we could!
Here's to hoping the forecasted snow isn't too bad and we can get back into somewhat of a normal schedule next week.

A look at our learning this week...

Fundations: due to the shorter days, we did not do Fundations this week.  No new papers will be sent home in the Friday Folder.  Please refer to and practice at home from the large packet sent home last Friday.

Shared Reading: we learned 3 new words this week since they were all short words that began with the same letter & sound: it, in, if and we also reviewed is.
We read several new books to help us learn these words: What is it?, This is big, What is out there?

Daily 5 & Guided Reading: due to the weather and shorter days, I chose not to send home our Guided Reading homework like I mentioned in last week's blog post.  Regardless of the weather next week, it will begin coming home on Tuesday's and Thursday's.  This is just a way for your child to show you what books they are working on in their daily guided reading groups. These books will be at your child's appropriate, independent reading level.
Some pictures from Daily 5 workstations this week:

Writing Workshop: we are learning how to put spaces between our words when we write.  The children are very excited to use the "spaceman" in the pictures below to help them with this.  At home, they can use 2 finger word spaces or a popsicle stick to help them with this.

Math: we played "Top It with Number Cards" (similar to War) and this game is coming home for you to play as a family.  Check your Friday Folder.  We continue to practice counting by 10's and noticed patterns on our number grids to 110.  We are now ready to begin Unit 5.  Check the notes in the Friday Folder to see what your child will be learning in this unit.

Social Studies: this week we learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. to understand why we have Monday off of school.  We learned he was a kind man who wanted to change unkind rules/laws into kind rules/laws. We learned it is because of him that we are able to have so many beautiful friends in our classroom and school and we are so thankful!  Our Friday craft celebrated him.  We also read books and watched this great video to learn more about him. Check it out as a family!  Kid President is the best!
