Countdown to Summer

  A look at our learning...

Fundations: we completed unit 4 and will begin our final unit next week.  We continued to work on the diagraph ck and how it typically appears after a short vowel at the end of a word.  In our final unit we will reinforce sentence structure, reading and writing short sentences with fluency/expression, using punctuation and learning some final spelling words.

Check the Friday Folder for the parent packet to extend their learning at home.  Even though we are on the downhill slide of Kindergarten, we want to keep reinforcing skills at home to help them stay on track for first grade.  The same goes for throughout the summer.

Shared Reading: they are really blossoming into little readers!  I've enjoyed those of you who have messaged me or told me personally how you have noticed your child reading more independently at home now.  I love this time of year when it really begins to "click" and I'm so glad you notice! I love snapping photos when they are reading!

Writing Workshop: please check your child's Take Home Folder for their penguin and elephant books they wrote during our informational writing unit.  All pieces were written independently, using skills they have acquired throughout the year!  There is some really great writing!  We are now working on Opinion Writing.  We will incorporate service learning into this as well.  They will be able to voice/write their opinion about what items we should purchase with the $400 we raised for the United Community Builders.  We will also share opinions on other items not attached to this.

Math: we worked on combinations of 10, story problems and 2D and 3D shapes.  Solving addition/subtraction problems within 10 and identifying all 2D and 3D shapes mentioned at last parent teacher conferences are end of Kindergarten goals.  These are great things to work on at home to see if they can independently do these things.

Countdown to summer: hard to believe it, but we are ready to begin our countdown to summer!  Please check your child's Friday Folder for a detailed note about this.  Some items are provided at school (food, materials, etc.) and some you will need to do at home (dress up days).

Friday craft: we are loving this beautiful spring weather!  Check out the cute bulletin board we created today! Ask your child what they made on the board!

Scholastic Book Orders: in your child's Friday Folder are the final Scholastic book orders of the school year.  Books would make a great end of year gift to celebrate their hard work in kindergarten! If you would like suggestions of books that are at your child's specific reading level, email me no later than Thursday evening and I'm happy to help make suggestions. While it is sometimes tricky to find appropriate levels for this age, many of your kiddos are becoming great readers who I might be able to find appropriate books for.  If not, I can always suggest great picture books to read aloud to them. Book orders are due no later than Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Class Awards: Congratulations to Jacob and Kyrie!  Jacob was chosen, by his peers, as April Packmate of the Month!  Kyrie was chosen to have "Lunch with the Principal" for the month of April!

Class Goal: we met our goal of 20 compliments and celebrated with a "snow day."  Nothing like a snow day on an 80 degree spring day! Love the ones that came complete with a spoon under their pillow!  There aren't too many things in life cuter than kindergarteners cuddled up on these days!

Today is Dr. Woods birthday!  Check out our hilarious office staff!  They each dressed as Dr. Woods at a different stage of his life!  Our class made a special birthday book for him.

Fun with friends
