Full week of learning!

A look at our learning...

Fundations: we completed unit 3 and will begin Unit 4 next week.  Unit 4 will focus on diagraphs, which are two letters that make one sound (wh, ch, sh, th, ck), trick words (words that can't be sounded out) and writing sentences with capitalization at the beginning, punctuation at the end, word spaces between words, quickly spelling known words and tapping out unknown words.

Shared Reading: we read the silly book Bananas Sometimes and the poem Fuzzy Wuzzy (a personal childhood favorite) to help us practice our new spelling words and work on our reading strategies when we come to unknown words. We also discussed what makes a book fiction and what makes a book non-fiction.  An easy way to remember? The letter F.  Fiction -Fake, both start with F!

Next week's spelling words:

he

she

we

Writing Workshop: during our opinion writing unit we have discussed the difference between a fact and an opinion.  We read a cute story called Not Norman: A Goldfish Story and shared our opinions about what pet we think is the best and why.  We also read the fun book Duck! Rabbit! and shared our opinions telling if we thought the main character was a duck or a rabbit. Check out this work below!

Math: while we worked on a variety math topics this week, we really focused on 2D and 3D shapes.  At parent teacher conferences I shared with you what 2D shapes your child has mastered.  Please practice the ones they did not know to ensure mastery by the end of this final trimester of Kindergarten!  We also want mastery of 2D shapes, since we are adding in 3D shapes this trimester.  By the end of Kindergarten, students should also know the following 3D shapes: cube, cone, sphere, cylinder, pyramid.

Below, they are taking a survey and graphing the results.

Counselor: this week the students took the NNAT3 assessment during counselor time.  This is an online assessment to determine if they qualify for the gifted program or the next round of testing for the gifted program.  If your student qualifies, you will be notified by someone from the Gifted Education office later this Spring.

Packmate of the Month: yay Wyatt! He was chosen, by his peers, as our March Packmate of the Month!  We celebrated him at an assembly on Tuesday.

Lunch with the Principal: yay Juelz! He was chosen to have Lunch with the Principal for the month of March.  They enjoyed playing and eating lunch with Mr. Foulk on Wednesday.

Reading Week: we had fun celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday and Reading Week this week! I'm so proud of all the reading that was done at home!  So many kiddos had "blackout" on their Bingo board and went into the drawing for a free book!

Here are a few pictures from all of the reading activities this week!  Even more on the class Facebook page.

Fun at school
