Feeling Festive in Kindergarten

A look at our learning...

Fundations: this week, we reviewed how to correctly form uppercase letters A–H, and we jumped right back into practicing how to tap out three-letter words when reading and writing. Be sure to check your child’s Friday Folder for the Fundations family packet, which includes ways to reinforce these skills at home. I strongly encourage you to complete the daily “tapping out words” practice; this routine builds confident readers and writers and helps keep students on track for end-of-kindergarten expectations.

You may have noticed an extra sheet of Fundations lined writing paper stapled to last week’s packet. You’ll see this paper each week, and it’s yours to use at home however it helps your child most.

  • Is your child losing a point on their spelling test for not forming letters correctly or not writing on the lines?

  • Are they spelling the words correctly but struggling with line placement?

  • Did they miss several letters on the Unit 1 assessment because of line placement rather than letter formation?

This practice paper is perfect for all of those situations. Use it as much as you’d like—it’s a simple tool that can make a big difference!

Shared Reading/Spelling: this week, our class enjoyed reading a collection of patterned favorites: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?, Panda, Panda, What Do You See?, and Santa, Santa, What Do You See?. These stories were perfect for highlighting our new spelling word of the week, “at,” along with many of our previously learned spelling words. Students also practiced their comprehension skills as we compared and contrasted the books—looking closely at how the patterns stayed the same, what changed, and how the author and illustrator made each story unique. It was a fun and meaningful way to build both reading and spelling confidence!

Writing Workshop:  our main focus continues to be writing a story (sentence) by sounding out/stretching out our words.  If they are writing about walking their dog, their story shouldn't just say "dog," but rather something such as "I took my dog on a walk."  That may be spelled something like this "I tk mi dog on a wk." Check out a couple examples from some of our classmates.  This is similar to what your child's writing should look like at this point in the year.

Math:  we continue to build our skills with addition and subtraction within 10, as well as tallying in groups of five. Students learn through hands-on games, number talks, verbal story problems, and our daily Number Corner calendar routines. We’re also exploring how numbers follow predictable patterns. For example, when counting from 1–100, each new decade (10s, 20s, 30s, etc.) follows the same pattern—the tens digit increases by one each time, while the ones digits repeat the sequence 0–9. Understanding these patterns helps students become more confident, flexible counters and prepares them for bigger math concepts ahead!

Family Traditions: we have thoroughly enjoyed hearing about each child's family traditions this week.  The students were so excited to share special things about their family and did an amazing job! Check out a few of the traditions below.

If you have not completed this family project, sent home in last week's Friday Folder, please do so by Wednesday, December 17th. This would be a great thing for you to work on this weekend.

Please make sure you have your child practice reading what you wrote on the paper, so they are confident in what to share when they bring it to school.

We have so many fun things planned for next week!  I hope to see every child at school every day (unless sick) so they don't miss out on the fun and special memories!

Class Book Exchange: a quick reminder that our class book exchange will take place on Friday, December 19th. All students will need a wrapped book to participate. A detailed note went home in last week’s Friday Folder—if it’s been misplaced, just email me and I’ll gladly resend the information.

Books are due by Thursday, December 18th, but you’re welcome to send them in anytime. Please make sure the book is wrapped and labeled with who it is from, and leave the “to” section blank.

If you need assistance providing a book for your child, please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m more than happy to help.

Winter Party: ❄️🎄 our second class party of the year will be our Winter Party on Friday, December 19th. A big thank-you to our room parent, Kayla Hagedorn, for organizing! 🎅✨

We need your help once again by signing up to donate items for the party. There are also volunteer spots available for those who can help with set-up or clean-up. If you plan to attend the party, please consider signing up for one of these slots — it is greatly appreciated and very helpful to us all. ☃️❤️
