Happy 2023

I hope you and your family had a relaxing and enjoyable winter break!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time off, but loved seeing my kiddos again this week!

I also hope you loved your gift from your child that we made in the classroom.

A look at our learning...

Fundations: we did not do Fundations or Heggerty this week, due to the short week.  Therefore, there is not a Fundations packet or handwriting practice in the Friday Folder this week.  We will begin again on Monday.

Writing Workshop: this week we worked on a special writing activity called "Winter Break in a snap." Each day we had a share time where we shared about our winter break and recorded our sharing on this paper.  You will see it in your child's take home folder tonight!

Math: we began Unit 5.  Please see the handout in your child's Friday Folder to see what your child will be learning over the course of this unit and how to help extend their learning at home.

Social Studies: we began our Authority & Government/Culture & Symbols unit.  This unit will last the entire month of January and February.  This week we learned about the structure and purpose of government, including the different levels of local government.  Please keep in mind, this is very basic/surface level, as they are only in Kindergarten.

A few things we learned/discussed:

1) Rules/Laws- why we have them and why they are important

2) Voting-for government officials and how we vote on everyday things we do in the classroom (Packmate of the Month, celebrations for earning compliments, etc.)

3) Name of our country, state and city

4) President, Governor and Mayor and we looked at their pictures on the SMARTboard

5) The Capitol Building in Washington D.C. and Jefferson City.  They loved looking at pictures of the beautiful buildings and comparing the two.

We will also tie in learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and President's Day during this time, so they will have an understanding of why we have those days off of school.

Friday Craft: we read the book Winter is Here by Kevin Henkes and made beautiful snowflakes to show what we like to do in the winter.  They will be displayed on the bulletin board outside our classroom.

December Packmate of the Month: yay Kyland!  He was chosen as our December Packmate of the Month!  We celebrated him at an assembly right before winter break!

3rd grade buddies: right before winter break, our 3rd grade buddies from Ms. Cohen's class visited.  We listened to a story, Santa's New Jet, and they helped us put together a cute santa craft that your child brought home. We try to do an activity with our buddies once a month.

We have a new friend!  Her name is Chi Chi (Chimara)! We are excited she is here!
