April Showers brings May Flowers

A look at our learning...

Fundations: along with working on digraphs (wh, sh, ch, th, ck) we are working on reading short sentences fluently.  When we are fluent readers we sound like we do when we talk and not like robots.  In the pictures below we are being "digraph detectives."

Shared Reading: we read the books Who has these feet? and To the Store to help us with our new spelling words of and her.  During shared reading we are also practicing fluent reading, like in Fundations.

Daily 5: we have several new literacy activities in our Daily 5 centers.  Many of them help us with reading and writing CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant), which also ties into what we have been learning all year during Fundations and will help make us better readers and writers.  Below are a few of our new centers:

Writing Workshop: we have now started opinion writing, our third and final, unit of study.  We are learning that an opinion is how you feel about something.  We are also learning to share/write at least three reasons why you feel the way you do.
This week we read a fun book called Duck! Rabbit! and gave our opinion on if we thought it was a duck in the book or a rabbit.  We also wrote our opinion on the best kind of pet and our favorite food and why.

Math: we finished until 6 this week and are now beginning unit 7.  We learned a fun addition game called "Growing Train" and a subtraction game called "Disappearing Train.  Check your child's Friday Folder for more ways to practice math at home.

School Library Month: April is School Library Month and we love our librarians, Mrs. Fitch and Mrs. Clemsen!

Donuts with Dudes: there was a great turn out for the 2nd Donuts with Dudes breakfast this morning and plenty of donuts this time around!  Thanks to all who came and also visited our classroom.

April Fools Day: Kids aren't the only ones who can play tricks!  I enjoyed tricking my class on Monday with "brown e's" and then followed up with the real, yummy thing!

School Day Fun!
